Few actors have portrayed a more wide variety of quirky characters than Johnny Depp. He seems to search for roles in which he can display a character’s “individuality.” In his latest effort, “The Tourist,” he plays a relatively normal math-teacher. But a quick look back shows that, for Depp, normal in not the norm.

Of course his quirkiest role was as poor Edward Scissorhands… or was that Willie Wonka…or Captain Jack Sparrow… you get the idea. Even when his characters are based firmly in reality he finds the kinks, as he did in “Ed Wood,” and in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” You could say there is also a fair amount of quirk in the determined drug dealer in “Blow,” and something truly was eating Gilbert Grape.

The point is Depp develops the quirks to the point of parody. His take as Dr. Hunter S. Thompson was close to camp, but then Thompson was a caricature of himself. Depp reached full campiness as the feckless moviemaker Ed Wood, a man who took comfort in cross-dressing and enthusiastically made some of the worst movies ever filmed. In the hands of Depp, Wood is not just a kooky director; he is a sympathetic character who believes in his own dreams. And that may be a fair description of Johnny Depp’s particular genius.

Not every actor makes a strong impression the first time out. As filmmaking has evolved, glamour has become less a part of the “star quality” that draws people to the theater. Today, it’s more about acting chops, and that sometimes takes a while to develop. Moviegoers who saw the Coen Brothers’ version of “True Grit” were treated to an impressive acting debut recently in the person of Haliee Steinfeld, who plays the precocious Mattie Ross.

In her first outing Steinfeld showed that she can carry a scene, as when she bargains for her murdered father’ s string of ponies. Her screen time with Jeff Bridges shows a confidence and understanding of film-making that goes beyond her teen years. She seemed not at all intimidated by the Oscar winner.

Good film acting requires a performer to display many emotions, not only by actions, but by thoughts. Her character is a smart cookie, always looking for the angle, trying to stay ahead of the game. Much of what happens with her takes place beneath the surface. Steinfeld gets it. Her performance is totally convincing.

It’s too soon to tell if Haliee Steinfled will move into the glamour ranks of Sharon Stone and Julia Roberts, but with “True Grit” she has proved she belongs as an actor.

As many adults know, there are plenty of anime movies out there not suitable for children, but what many don’t know is the plethora of anime for children that adults will also enjoy. Some titles that are family friendly include the many works of Hayao Miyazaki’s, such as “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Ponyo”, which mostly center on children discovering a world beyond their own, Katsuhiro Otomo’s “Steamboy” (though this does have some violent scenes toward the end), and Hiroyuki Morito’s “The Cat Returns”. Miyazaki’s main characters are for the most part girls aged anywhere between five and twelve years old, but are filled with thrilling chase scenes and lots of outdoor scenery, “Kiki’s Delivery Service” being a very good example. “Steamboy” is a story set in 1860s Britain full of strange inventions and a revolution over the advancement of steam powered machinery, little boys will really connect with the main character in this spectacular film. As for “The Cat Returns”, a girl is accidentally engaged to a very large cat prince and must work with a statuette come to life and another large cat to save herself. These are all wonderful titles if you are looking to begin creating a family-friendly anime watching environment for your family.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules (March 25): Although the first adaptation of the popular middle-school graphic novel series garnered mixed reviews, Roger Ebert rated the film three-and-a-half out of four stars. The sequel is based on the second book in the series and revolves around main character Greg Heffley and his torturous older brother, Rodrick. When Rodrick finds Heffley’s original diary (the recorded story of the first film), the conflict between the brothers is ratcheted up to the next level. The actor who plays Greg, Zachary Gordon, has appeared in television shows as varied as How I Met Your Mother, Ni Hao, Kai-lan, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold, all available from Direct TV Indiana dealers, along with all other Direct TV locations.

Scream 4 (April 15): Director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson return to their popular horror series with the intent of starting up another trilogy. David Arquette, Courteney Cox, and Neve Campbell return from the first trilogy, this time joined by Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, and Rory Culkin. The film will parody the endless commercialization of the horror industry.

Madea’s Big Happy Family (April 22): Tyler Perry’s franchise revolving around his main character Madea returns, after 2009′s I Can Do Bad All By Myself. In this installment, Madea attempts to help out her niece Shirley, who’s discovered that she’s ill. Shirley wants her adult children to return home, but the children have problems of their own. It’s up to Madea to make everything right.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (May 20): The new Pirates film kicks off the summer movie season, this time directed by Rob Marshall instead of Gore Verbinski. However, Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, and Kevin McNally are among the returning stars. Blackbeard and a mysterious woman (played by Penelope Cruz) are in search of the Fountain of Youth, and Jack Sparrow falls right in their path.

The Hangover: Part II (May 26): All the main stars will be returning for this much-anticipated sequel, once again directed by Todd Phillips. This time, the gang travels to Bangkok in order to celebrate dentist Stu’s wedding. We can only imagine where things go from there.

Kung Fu Panda 2 (May 27): Now that main character Po is a kung fu master, he, Master Shifu, and the Furious Five have a new missiondefending kung fu from the villainous peacock Lord Shen, who aims to destroy the art forever. Luckily, a new group of masters (Skunkman, Thundering Rhino, Soothsayer, and Croc) are here to help.

X-Men: First Class (June 3): Matthew Vaughn’s first shot at the X-Men will serve as a prequel to the earlier trilogy. The rift between Professor Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr (the villainous Magneto) is played out in the 1960s against the parallel storyline of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.

Cars 2 (June 24): Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy return as Lightning McQueen and Mater in this Pixar sequel, which will feature the characters in an international spy adventure as they prepare to compete in the first World Grand Prix. This will be only the second Pixar film to have a sequel, after Toy Story.

Rise of the Apes (June 24): Rupert Wyatt’s Planet of the Apes installment is also a prequel, leading up the events of the earlier films. Most notably, you’ll witness the birth of Caesar, leader of the ape revolution in 1972′s Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. James Franco plays a scientist attempting to find a cure for Alzheimer’s.

Anybody under the age of 40 had to be asking themselves why we’re getting a new “Green Hornet” movie when they first found out. That’s after they looked him up to find out who he was, of course. The pulp-fiction hero of the ’30s and ’40s hasn’t had a presence in mainstream pop-culture since the 1966-1967 television series, which was more notable for introducing Bruce Lee to American audiences than anything else. For some reason, though, starting in the 1990s, big-name writers started batting around screenplay ideas, with George Clooney attached at one point to play the lead. The result, after more than a decade, is Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet.Michel Gondry may be an unlikely director, with art-film darlings like The Science of Sleep and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind under his belt. The film’s star, Seth Rogen, is even more of a mystery, however. Rogen is known entirely for comedic roles, and not exactly for a fit superhero’s body, if you know what I mean. Joining Rogen are Jay Chou as Kato, the Hornet’s martial-arts-proficient valet, Cameron Diaz as an amateur investigator, and Christoph Waltz as Benjamin Chudnofsky, a villain created exclusively for the film. After watching the trailer, though, some may find themselves won over. Seth Rogen is no Christian Bale, but it’s clear he’s not trying to be. The Green Hornet could serve as a lighter superhero classic, in the vein of the first Iron Man film. Jay Chou plays well as a straight man, and Rogen’s puppy-dog earnestness can be endearing. Not much was seen of Waltz’s villain, but it’s a relief to have lost Nicolas Cage, who dropped out after not being allowed to speak in a Jamaican accent. Good thing he found The Sorceror’s Apprentice to take him in, huh?

With big American blockbusters dominating the current theater scene, it’s important to remember that there are still some independent and foreign films on the market worth your time. Here are a few that might catch your interest.

The Secret in Their Eyes is an Argentine mystery by director Juan Jos Campanella. While set in 1999, it flashes back to 1974 when a federal agent begins to investigate the murder of a young woman. Campanella had previously directed episodes of House and Law & Order, but this film shows him at his best, and has already won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Don’t let this one pass you by.

City Island is a limited-release American comedy film set in the Bronx location of the same name. Stars include such big names as Andy Garcia, Julianna Margulies, and Alan Arkin. The plot follows an Italian family named the Rizzos hiding some big secrets, like an illegitimate son and what the daughter is doing when she’s supposed to be in college. Overall, this film focuses on the importance of family, and could provide a smart and touching alternative to the standard family fare.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the adaptation of the first book in the international best-selling series. An English-language adaptation is currently in production, but it is still interesting to see this film in its original Swedish. The dark story brings together an investigative journalist (similar to the books’ author Stieg Larsson) and a young female hacker named Lisabeth. With the release of the third book, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, earlier this year, and the other two films coming later in 2010, there has never been a better time to catch up on the series.

Hollywood has been entranced by remakes for about a decade now, and comic books have also become increasingly popular sources of inspiration. Here is a look at some of the films out now that you may recognize from somewhere else.

The Karate Kid is a remake of the 1984 film by Rocky director John G. Avildsen. The new film comes from the director of Agent Cody Banks, Harald Zwart, and stars Jackie Chan and Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith. The film looks like a classic tale of overcoming adversity and standing up for yourselfwith a healthy dose of kung-fu added in.

The A-Team is another 80′s remake, this time of the popular television show which ran from 1983-1986 and launched the career of Mr. T. The military thriller follows a unique Army Special Forces unit attempting to recover their good name, and features cameos by some stars from the original show like Dwight Schultz and Dirk Benedict. For a slice of summer action, it will definitely fit the bill.

Jonah Hex is the first film adaptation of the long-running comic book character. It’s a blend of horror and Westerns starring Josh Brolin as the disfigured gunslinger, who first appeared in All-Star Western 10 back in 1972. Megan Fox, a proclaimed comics fan and star of Transformers 1 & 2, appears as a brothel worker who falls for the main character.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a video-game adaptation starring Jake Gyllenhaal as the eponymous Prince, who becomes the bearer of a magical dagger capable of reversing time. The video-game series has been around since 1989, but this film is based off a series that debuted in 2003. Also starring Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina, this film has an impressive pedigree for what was once considered the domain of geeks and nerds.

Now in its second week in theaters, Knight & Day debuted at 3 last weekend, coming in behind Toy Story 3 and the comedy ensemble piece Grown Ups. Although the film marked the second pairing of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz since 2001′s Vanilla Sky, the movie is falling hard below expectations. It lost 9 in ticket sales after its first day and becoming the least-earning Tom Cruise action movie of the last 20 years.

Considering the attachment of director James Mangold (best known for hits Walk the Line and 3:10 to Yuma), this turn of events is equally surprising. However, Mangold was not the first choice for the filmand neither were Cruise or Diaz. The disparate list of considerations for Cruise’s role included comedians Adam Sandler and Chris Tucker, as well as more versatile star Gerard Butler. In a similar turn, Diaz took over for Eva Mendes. Tom Dey, the director of Shanghai Noon and Failure to Launch, was originally signed on for the project. What did he choose instead? Family comedy Marmaduke, which has been gaining even more scathing reviews.<img src"http://www.intheatre.org/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" alt"" class"mceWPmore mceItemNoResize" title"More...">

Things aren’t all bad, however. Cruise’s and Diaz’s on-screen chemistry has been praised, as well as Cruise’s strong solo performance. The film is not catching on with younger viewers, though, perhaps because of the age of the two stars. In that respect, maybe the similar romantic-action-comedy Killers will perform better, despite its even lower reviews. That film stars Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, both of whom have a strong teen fanbase thanks to shows like That ’70s Show and Grey’s Anatomy, respectively. If you’re looking for a fluffy summer film, you could just take your pick, but you may feel more adult if you go with Knight & Day.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opens today, and hardcore fans of the vampire-teen-romance series everywhere are rubbing the sleep from their eyes this morning. The lines showed no signs of diminishing for this new film. Along with regulars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, the film also sees the addition of Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel. Howard, best known for her roles in The Village and Spider-Man 3, takes on the role of Victoria, the powerful vampire temptress who was portrayed by Rachelle Lefevre in the two earlier films. Samuel is an Australian actor still relatively unknown in America, taking on the role of Riley Biers, Victoria’s faithful servant and lover.Eclipse is the second film in the series to be directed by a manthis time David Slade, taking over from Chris Weitz. Who knows what is attracting these guys to the frothy melodrama and over-the-top action of this seriescould it be the millions of adoring fans? Whatever the reason, Slade at least has a solid pedigree. He directed the horror chamber piece Hard Candy, starring Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson, and then took his first shot at vampires with an adaptation of the comic book 30 Days of Night. Reviews of his new film have been mixed, but several critics agree that this is the strongest film in the series so far. Some recurring criticisms, however, include Roger Ebert’s dislike of the infamous “gazes” between main characters, and Steve Persall’s criticism that the storyline continues to go nowhere.Of course, these failings will hardly hurt the box office earnings of the film, with its eager fans ready for more of Taylor Lautner’s bare chest and Pattinson’s searching eyes. Others may want to wait for the DVD release, so they can watch guiltily in the comfort of their own homes.

Those who turned out for the third in the Twilight series early this morning also got a sneak peek at another popular series nearing its end. The trailer for the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows premiered before the film, and it had stars like Lo Bosworth of The Hills showing their appreciation via Twitter. The trailer is now available on the web, and starts off with the snake-faced Voldemort (a slithery Ralph Fiennes) standing in the woods, before he is approached by star Harry. The trailer then kicks into high gear, showing the dwarfs, dragons, and snakes that make Hogwarts such a dangerous place to try to get an education. The film is being released in two parts, with the first premiering in November 2010 and the second in July 2011. The two-part philosophy is being emulated by Twilight for its finale as well, with the first part of Breaking Dawn arriving in November 2011. Breaking up these series into two parts will help ensure that fans are not left disappointed, after the filmmakers have been forced to cut or adapt plot elements in earlier films.Luckily, all the main actors are returning for this final installment. This will be especially useful when the inevitable 10-disc box set of the films is released (with three discs of bonus features), and viewers can watch the series in succession while the actors age and grow along with their characters. One thing that will set this film apart from the others is the setting, which takes Harry and his gang out of Hogwarts and puts them on the road. Daniel Radcliffe has called the film “a road movie.” But more than that it’s a romance, a fantasy, and an action movieone so intense that stuntman David Holmes suffered a tragic injury while on set. Make sure to be there when everything comes together this November.
