ITWorks
In 1985, Executive Director Barbara Evans
conceived the WORKS idea loosely based on the
Shenandoah International Playwrights Retreat in
Virginia, which was founded by Paul
Hildebrand.Several weeks before each Works weekend,
ITA puts out a call for scripts. During the
weekend, scripts selected by professional readers
are workshopped, giving both the playwrights and
other theater artists an opportunity to join in
the creative process.
IT WORKS nurtures and supports current or former
Indiana residents. Playwrights receive a monetary
recognition, The
Frank and Katrina Basile Emerging Indiana Playwrights
Award.
The concluding reading of the scripts is open to
the public, and all theater patrons and artists are
encouraged to come and enjoy the amazing results of
the WORKS process and to participate in the brief
discussion.
The General Format
Level A
- Two scripts will be selected from the
submissions of completed one acts and
full-lengths drafts. These submissions may have
been workshopped or had readings previously but
they must not have been produced.
- These two highlighted scripts will be
rehearsed and workshopped through the
editing/rewriting process over the course of the
weekend and presented in their entirety at the
conclusion of the conference.
- Two directors and theaters will be selected
to assist these playwrights in the developmental
process. The two highlighted scripts may be
considered for future development or production.
Dramaturges may potentially be available for the
two highlighted playwrights.
Level B
- Other scripts will be chosen for cold
readings, and these playwrights will benefit from
discussion moderated by a dramaturge or director.
Playwrights will receive response sheets from the
actors and observers. Playwrights receiving cold
readings may also rewrite and have additional
readings throughout the weekend.
- ALL ACTORS will have the opportunity to
participate in the cold readings of plays under
development. This experience is usually not
available for actors until the regional or
professional level. Please encourage actors to
attend for this unique experience.
- The final presentation of the two highlighted
scripts is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
